Made for serving freshly cooked rice, this wooden rice paddle (shamoji) brings a considered simplicity to a task done every day. Soak it in water for a while before use and the rice lifts away without sticking, scooping cleanly and lightly.
The paddle is cut from Japanese azusa, a hardwood of the birch family. Prized for its firmness and clean, straight grain, the wood is carved to shape and then polished by hand, and left unlacquered so that it stays smooth to both eye and touch. The flowing line from face to handle follows a form passed down for centuries, traditional in origin yet modern and refined in feeling.
After use, rinse off any grains, wipe dry, and let it dry fully before storing to keep it beautiful from the first use onward.
