This hand-thrown Korean porcelain incense holder is made for stick incense, using a lidded dish that doubles as its own case. Fill the base with ash, stand a stick upright in it, and set the lid aside while it burns, then cover it to keep the ash clean between uses. The lid is hand-painted with a spray of bamboo in blue underglaze.
These porcelain wares are made in Anseong, Korea by a husband and wife team of ceramic artists. One throws each piece by hand at the wheel while the other hand-paints their designs, every detail minutely considered so that the utility of the object becomes a pleasure in itself.
The couple avoid decoration and density, pursuing fine lines and simplicity, and the porcelain is thrown to the very limits of the material. Each aesthetic choice plays a functional role too, the same care they bring to their tea ware carried into a small object for daily ritual.
Each piece is handmade and hand-painted, so the design may vary slightly from one to the next. Please reach out before ordering if you'd like to know more.
Ash is not included.
