Special Event: Horii Shichimeien Matcha Tasting

TGL invites you to a special matcha tasting experience with Horii Shichimeien, one of Uji, Kyoto's most celebrated tea merchants, with a rich legacy spanning 600 years.

Each guest will taste five distinct matcha varieties, ranging from everyday matcha to the finest available. These rare teas are not available at any tea shops in the U.S., providing a unique opportunity to explore the authentic flavors of Horii Shichimeien's matcha.

This tasting offers two different courses to choose from. Each course includes welcome sobacha and is accompanied by chestnut Yokan (Japanese traditional jelly) from Nagano.

Course A - 2/2 Sunday 10 am

Matcha #1: Choukou no Mukashi
A blend of hand-picked high-quality tea leaves that have won awards at tea competitions, focusing on those with excellent aroma and strong umami. The leaves are carefully blended for a balanced profile, with smooth taste and rich umami as the key characteristics.

Matcha #2: Narino
Made from the single-origin Narino variety, which originates from the "Okunoyama" tea garden. Known for its strong sweetness, it contains nearly twice the amount of theanine, the compound responsible for umami, compared to other matcha varieties.

Matcha #3: Todou Mukashi
A blend of hand-picked tea leaves, with Samidori, a Kyoto variety, as the main component. Known for its strong umami and minimal bitterness, it is recommended for those who regularly enjoy matcha and seek a slightly higher quality experience.

Matcha #4: Agata no Shiro
Made from hand-picked young leaves and carefully selected high-quality tencha sourced from tea-producing regions in Kyoto Prefecture. It features a balanced astringency, with smooth umami unfolding in the background.

Matcha #5: Hatsu Mukashi
Made from high-quality tencha, carefully selected by the tea master from tea-producing regions in Kyoto Prefecture. Known for its fragrant aroma and subtle, smooth taste, it has a clean profile with no overpowering flavors. Ideal for use in confectionery or matcha lattes.

Course B - 2/2 Sunday 2 pm

Produced from the "Okunoyama" tea garden, which has been in operation since the Muromachi period, made from the new Narino variety, carefully crafted for the national tea competition.

Matcha #2: Homare no Mukashi
