Silver Plated Brass Tray

This is a silver-plated brass tray is a demonstration of a specific methods of shaping metal. The beautiful rise of the rim is the result of a technique called hera-shibori, where a metal plate is fixed to a mold, rotated, and pressed against the mold by hand using a specifically designed spatula. The way the spatula is angled and how much force is applied to achieve the perfect balance between the fine metal, and the precise shape requires precision skill and craftsmanship.

Item details: As the trays are used, their coloration softens and burnishes to a unique pattern due to oxidation and sulfurization. In particular, silver-plated items will build a specific patina called atari in areas that are often touched by hands or other utensils.
