7-11. NANAO Plant Candle

These traditional Japanese candles are known as warousouku. Each candle is made completely out of sustainable resources, including 100% sumac (haze) wax, rush weed, washi paper, and silk fibers for the wick. Due to its structure and the cylindrical design of the wick, it burns stably and beautifully with a larger flame than conventional candles. It is shaped in such a way that the upper part is wider than the base, preventing wax from running down the sides. The sumac wax and wick dissipate evenly into the air while lit and produce no smoke, toxins, and essentially no odor. Since only natural ingredients are used, even extinguishing the flame produces little soot and odor.

These candles are well-suited for use in meditation, as they are timed, non-toxic and have a large flame to focus your attention. The flame in particular helps to emanate a sense of emotion rarely seen due to the electrical lights that illuminate our daily lives. While emanating a gentle, ethereal warmth, the candle even seems to subtly change its expression in response to prayer, conversation, or self reflection.

The company that makes these candles was founded in 1892 in Nanao, a city in the Noto Peninsula of Japan. Japanese candles originated with the introduction of Buddhism to the country, but did not come into wide use until the Edo period (1603-1868) when the cultivation of haze trees, the source of the candles’ wax, flourished in the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Nanao thrived during this time as a port city, where the materials for the wax and wicks used in the candles were imported.
