Traditional Japanese Kaiseki meals are highly-organized rituals. All aspects of the meal, and not just the food, are carefully thought through. Even a seemingly small part, such as the table setting, can have a large effect on the experience. Accordingly, chopstick rests like this are an important part of holiday or formal Kaiseki meals. This chopstick rest is made in Hasami, a city in the Nagasaki prefecture renowned for its ceramics, by the 9th generation artisan studio, Shiratake Gama, which also produces other wares like Mame Zara and small dishes. Each chopstick rest features a pattern carefully transferred by hand by the studios artisans, making each one unique.
