Toshinham Incense Holder

These one-of-a-kind incense holders are called Toshinham, and originate from Jeju province, an island off the coast of South Korea. Toshinham are made to look like traditional straw houses as they were originally used as small, household shrines to the snake deity, Eopsin. The rich, black stone is completely opaque, but when lit, the smoke can escape through the rock's pores, giving the comforting home a glow.

This incense holder is made by a Jeju brand that produces objects and images embodying the essence of Jeju island. Jeju is covered with porous volcanic rock, from which these holders are carved. The artisanal craft needed for carving this rock began in the 17th century, but these skills began to die out by the mid 20th century. Slowly the practice is being revived, resulting in these unique incense holders.
