The Couto toothpaste was first developed in 1932 by a pharmacist named Alberto Ferreira Couto. This medicinal toothpaste played an important role in changing oral hygiene habits in Portugal. The toothpaste was registered in Oporto in 1932 and was an immediate success. 'Couto Paste' is still used in Portugal as a synonym for toothpaste. The Couto toothpaste is still produced by using its semi-artisanal methods from back in the day.
