Cast Iron Combo Cooker

Since its founding in 1896 by Joseph Lodge and his wife, the Lodge Manufacturing Company has become something of a national treasure for its American made cast iron and carbon steel cookware. The first foundry was opened in South Pittsburg, a Tennessee town located along the Cumberland Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains, and the company maintains its headquarters there. Alongside this rich history is a drive for constant innovation. In 2002, for example, Lodge introduced pre-seasoned cookware—an industry first, which has now become a standard—eliminating the hassle of its unseasoned counterparts. These cast iron products are pre-seasoned at the foundry using soybean oil.

The iron pans are cast in molds and feature integrated handles. Although heavier, cast iron distributes heat much more evenly than steel, in fact in tests on cooking utensils it is out performed only by copper. Cast iron bonds with oil in a similar way to carbon steel, forming what amounts to a non-stick coating, one that is improved by heat, rather than caused to peel.
