This is a cast iron ashtray made in Mizusawa, Iwate Prefecture, a town where the tradition of Nambu ironware is still alive. With a simple and timeless design, it is heavy and has a flat bottom structure, so it has an excellent sense of stability. The deep bowl-shaped interior prevents ash from flying off and makes it easy to extinguish the fire.
The dark matte ink color is due to the oxidation that happens in the kiln at a high temperature of 1220°F. The beeswax finish also creates a natural sheen. It is rust-resistant, and as you use the tray, it will fit in your hand and develop the unique texture of cast iron. When not being used as an ashtray, it can also be used in a variety of ways in your study or on your desk as a paperweight or storage space for small items.
