This butter knife is carefully crafted by a 4th generation metalsmith founded in 1916, in the city of Takaoka, in the Toyama prefecture. The knife is designed by Osamu Saruyama, but each part has been crafted by different artisans in order to maximize quality.
This production style is one traditional to Japanese crafts, where multiple artisans will be involved in the production of one single item.
Osamu Saruyama is a Tokyo-based artist who works in product design, spatial design, and graphic art. In a world filled with plastic, disposable goods, and fast fashion, his creations stand out with a unique and thoughtful style.
He says, “The joy of using something made with years of care and effort is greater than you’d expect. I believe objects are closely connected to the human spirit. Maybe that’s why they’re so important in our daily lives.”
Saruyama’s designs are simple and practical, but they also carry deeper meaning. He believes everyday items have a strong connection to people’s lives, and each piece he creates shows his careful attention and long-lasting dedication.
