Brown Betty Tea Pot

In the 17th century, the East Indian Company introduced tea from China to European countries. The tea drinking culture flourished among the middle class in Europe which lead to an industrialization of European tea potteries. Instead of importing expensive and delicate porcelain which often cracked from the constant exposure to boiling water, English potters from Staffordshire, birthplace of infamous British potteries such as Wedgwood and Minton, started using the local red clay which retained heat very well. To this day, genuine Brown Betty tea pots are made of the original red clay with a unique brown manganese glaze called Rockingham glaze in the city of Stoke-on-Trent. The shape of the pot causes the tea leaves to be gently swirled around as the boiling water is added, thus producing an exquisite infusion. Rooted deeply with the English afternoon tea culture, it is strongly believed by the British people that the Brown Betty brews the best pot of tea in the world.
