Japanese Candle

Known as Warousoku, these traditional Japanese candles are made by a business founded in 1892 in Nanao, a city in the Noto Peninsula of Japan. Japanese candles originated with the introduction of Buddhism to the country, but did not come into wide use until the Edo period (1603-1868) when the cultivation of haze trees, the source of the candles’ wax, flourished in the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Nanao thrived during this time as a port city, where the materials for the wax and wicks used in the candles were imported. The wax of the candles is derived from only plant-based materials, such as haze seeds, canola flowers, and coconut oil, and is shaped in such a way that the upper part is wider than the base, preventing wax from running down the sides. The wick is made from a reed wrapped in washi, a kind of Japanese paper. The wick forms a cylinder, which allows air to rise through the hollow center, improving combustion and creating a larger and more powerful flame.

Each candle burns for approximately 90 minutes.
