Each piece of pottery is hand thrown by the artisan Nikaido. He honed his craft while living for 14 years in Mashiko, in the Tochigi prefecture, the center of the Japanese modern craft movement, called “Mingei.” While many contemporary Japanese ceramic artists use whatever sort of clay fits with their aesthetics or concepts, Nikaido adheres to the traditional concepts of Japanese ceramics, like those used for Iga Yaki, and sources his clay from Mashiko.
